Description
Pennycombe Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the 17th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed from whitewashed rendered cob and stone rubble, featuring end stacks on the main block and a rear lateral stack on the wing. The roof is slate, gabled at the ends of the main block and hipped at the end of the wing. The building has an L-shaped plan with two single depth ranges, and the west-facing range is likely the earlier part.
The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical four-window arrangement on the west-facing range. There is a front door to the left, which is sheltered by a flat porch canopy supported by moulded brackets. The ground floor has two 19th-century three-light casement windows with glazing bars, while the first floor features three similar windows and a small one-light window to the left. The wing has a four-window south front, with a 20th-century door to the right, also with a flat porch canopy on moulded brackets. It includes two first-floor and one ground-floor 19th-century three-light casements, matching those on the main range, along with other 20th-century timber casements with glazing bars. The rear elevation of the main block has a door with a flat porch canopy and two- and three-light casements with glazing bars.
The left side of the main block has a projecting bread oven, although a small bow window with three ogee-headed lights mentioned in earlier descriptions no longer exists. The property also features 19th-century iron railings in front of the garden. The interior has not been inspected but may contain interesting features, including early roof timbers. This farmhouse is an attractive traditional building from before 1700, located on a roadside site.
