Description
The Old Forge is probably an 18th-century house, substantially renovated in the 20th century. It was originally a forge. The house is constructed of whitewashed rendered cob and stone with a thatched roof, gabled at the left end and half-hipped at the end of a wing. There are end chimney stacks to both the wing and the main range. The building has an L-shaped plan, consisting of two single-depth blocks set at right angles to one another. The main range, facing the road, contains a single room. The wing, set end-on to the road, features a fireplace with a bread oven. A front door is located in the angle between the main range and the wing. The exterior has an asymmetrical 1:1 window front, with a single window in the end of the wing. A thatched porch is situated on posts to the right of the main block. The windows are 20th-century small-pane timber casements. The interior has been largely modernized, with the wing retaining a chamfered crossbeam, a rebuilt fireplace with a separate bread oven, and a plank door leading to the stair. The building forms a group with Rollestone Cottages, the Ley Arms, and Youngs Farmhouse.
