Description

Fern Cottage is a cottage that was originally part of a larger house, dating from the mid 17th century or earlier. It has a whitewashed and rendered exterior, likely made of stone and cob, and features a thatched roof that is half-hipped at the right end and hipped at the end of the rear wing. There is a brick chimney stack located at the junction between the main block and the rear wing. The layout consists of one room wide and two rooms deep, with the principal room at the front and a smaller service room in the rear wing. A 20th-century lean-to is attached at the right end, providing access to the principal room.

The cottage is two storeys high and has a one-window front, with a ground floor that includes a single metal-framed window from the 20th century. The rear elevation features a first-floor 2-light 17th-century mullioned window with chamfered mullions, along with 18th or 19th-century small-pane casements. Inside, the principal room at the front has a chamfered axial beam, with the stops possibly concealed in the wall plaster, and a red sandstone fireplace that includes a timber lintel and a brick-lined bread oven. The roof has 20th-century trusses, but it also contains two boxed-in curved timbers that are likely remnants of a jointed cruck roof truss.
