Description

Thirlby Cottage is a house with origins dating back to the mid-17th century, though it has undergone some remodelling in the 20th century. The building is constructed of whitewashed rendered stone and features a thatched roof that is hipped at the left end and gabled at the right end. There is a stack at the right end and a lateral stack at the rear left. The plan consists of a single depth with two rooms and a central passage, and the house has been extended at the left end where a former outbuilding once stood, creating one room over a garage.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front that has four windows. To the right of the centre, there is a gabled 20th-century porch leading into the cross passage, which features a 17th-century timber chamfered doorframe. The windows are small pane 19th-century timber casements, with those in the extension being reused from an old cottage. A 20th-century garage door is located on the ground floor to the left.

Inside, the right-hand room retains a chamfered doorframe from the passage, a massive exposed chamfered crossbeam, exposed joists, and a blocked fireplace that likely hides an early lintel and jambs. The left-hand room has an exposed scroll-stopped crossbeam, and there may be an early fireplace concealed behind the current arrangement. A winder stair is located at the rear of the passage, though the position of the original stair is unclear. The roof has not been inspected but may hold additional interest.
