2/180 Thirlby Cottage

GV II

House. Circa mid C17 origins, with some C20 remodelling. Whitewashed rendered stone, thatched roof, hipped at left end, gabled at right end ; right end stack, rear left lateral stack. Plan: Single depth 2 room plan with a central passage, the house extended at the left end on the site of a former outbuilding as one room over a garage. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front with a gabled C20 porch to right of centre into the cross passage with C17 timber chamfered doorframe. Small pane C19 timber casements (those to the extension re-used from an old cottage), C20 garage door ground floor left. Interior: The right-hand room has the remains of a chamfered doorframe from the passage, a massive exposed chamfered crossbeam, exposed joists and a blocked fireplace, probably concealing an early lintel and jambs. The left-hand room has an exposed scroll-stopped crossbeam, an early fireplace may survive behind the present arrangement. Winder stair at rear of passage is secondary, position of original stair unclear. Roof: Not inspected but may be of interest.
