Description
Southbrook Cottage is a cottage dating from the late 17th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. It is constructed from colourwashed rendered cob and stone, topped with a thatched roof that is half-hipped at the left end and gabled at the right end. The building features a right end stack and back-to-back axial stacks. The plan consists of a single depth range that is three rooms wide, with a direct entry into the centre room. The left end room may have been a later addition and was previously a separate cottage, which has its own entrance on the left end. Inside, the centre room contains a staircase in the corner next to the stack, featuring a straight flight with a winder. There is also a single-storey 20th-century rear lean-to with a corrugated asbestos roof.
The exterior of the cottage is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front with three windows. The thatch eaves are eyebrowed over the three first-floor windows. A 19th-century gabled lattice porch leads to a plank front door located to the right of centre, and there are 1- and 2-light 19th-century timber casement windows with glazing bars. The rear elevation includes one 1-light window, and there is a second porch and front door on the left gable end that provides access to the left end room.
Inside, the centre room features a chamfered cross beam with straight cut stops, and the fireplace is partly blocked but retains a chamfered lintel. There is a recess with a timber sill to the left of the stack, which was likely a window before the left end room was added. The original staircase is located to the right of the stack. The right-hand room has a 19th-century grate and a chimneypiece that has been introduced from elsewhere. The first floor remains largely unaltered, with rooms opening into one another and plaster extending up to the collar of the trusses. The cottage is remarkably well-preserved, both inside and out.
