Description
Hillside is a detached house dating to the late 17th century, situated in Dawlish Starcross. Originally a small, one-room dwelling, it is constructed of rendered cob with a corrugated iron roof, likely replacing the original thatch. The house has a side passage and a cob stack, with a winder staircase situated at the north end. A small, single-storey cob lean-to is attached at the north end. A continuous, single-storey lean-to on the back is not of particular architectural interest.
The main house is two storeys high, with two windows featuring 19th or 20th-century casements. The first-floor windows have horizontal bars, while the lower floor window on the right is small-paned. Plank doors lead to a wide opening on the left and to the lean-to on the right. The gables are plain, with a stack on the right. The rear of the house includes steel casements in an extension.
Inside, the ground-floor fireplace has a chamfered bressumer with run-out stops, and the chimney breast is formed from cob with visible jambs. The roof contains a heavy central truss and the foot of another, visible in a small bedroom. Large purlins are pegged to former rafters. A wattle and daub screen partition separates the passage from the parlour at ground floor level.
Hillside represents a good survival of a vernacular building type in an area affected by significant rebuilding and replacement.
