Description
Ilex Cottage is a house, likely dating from the 18th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century. It is constructed of colourwashed and stuccoed stone, probably with a slate roof behind a parapet. The ends and axis of the house feature stacks. The house has a single-depth range, encompassing three rooms, with the entrance situated to the right of centre, facing the staircase.
The asymmetrical front elevation has four bays and regular window placement, with rusticated quoins. A lean-to porch shelters the front door, which is a two-leaf door with panelled reveals, and a 19th-century half-glazed inner door featuring margin glazing. There are 19th and 20th-century four-pane plate glass sash windows. A first-floor French window on the left opens onto a balcony supported by iron columns and a trellis balustrade, with a hipped roof on timber posts, which overlooks the Exe estuary. The interior was not inspected but may retain interesting features. The building has group value with Southbrook Lodge and Southbrook.
