Ford Farmhouse

Ford Farmhouse is likely a 19th-century remodelling of a 17th-century house. The exterior is colourwashed cob on stone rubble footings, with a left-end stack including a bread oven and a rear lateral stack with a tall brick shaft. It has a slate roof, gabled at the ends. The building was probably originally arranged with a three-room and passage layout, with the lower end to the right and two heated rooms to the left. A front door, said to lead into a passage, is located to the right of centre. There’s a very shallow projection to the rear left and a single-storey lean-to to the rear right and centre.

The asymmetrical front has five window bays with regular fenestration. A gabled 19th-century porch with curly bargeboards is located to the right of centre, along with a panelled front door. A French window is to the left of centre, and the majority of the windows are 19th-century 16-pane timber sashes. The two ground floor windows to the right of the porch have fixed grilles. The ground floor has two windows, and the first floor has four, with one window on the ground floor. A 20th-century gabled projection is to the right of centre, and a shallow projection – possibly for a former stair – is to the right. The interior has not been inspected, but information from the occupier suggests it is plain and has no exposed ceiling beams. It’s an attractive and developed house positioned prominently on a roadside site.
