Description

The Almshouses, built in 1888 by the Courtenays of Powderham Castle, are located on the north side of Church Street in Kenton. Constructed from red brick with yellow brick and stone dressings, they feature a slate roof adorned with crested ridge tiles and two gables at the front, which have bands of purple and grey slate. The building has a U-shaped plan, consisting of a small single-depth central block flanked by short front wings on either side, with a verandah connecting them.

The exterior is single-storey and symmetrical, showcasing a 1:2:1 window arrangement. The gable ends of the wings are decorated with curly bargeboards, and the verandah is supported by timber posts with curly struts, featuring two gables at the front that include Gothic timber tracery. There are two plank front doors leading into the main block, positioned beneath the verandah. Each wing contains a 2-light transomed timber window with a depressed 2-centred arch and glazing bars, along with a small 1-light window in the attic.

In front of the almshouses, there is a low brick wall enclosing the garden, which includes brick gate piers topped with Gothic stone finials. The almshouses are well-preserved and detailed, situated immediately southeast of the parish church, and they hold group value with Nos. 1-9 Church Street, located south of the church.
