Description
The Kenton War Memorial is a monument dedicated to those who served in the First and Second World Wars, unveiled in 1920.
Constructed from Cornish granite sourced from the Penryn Quarries, the memorial features an obelisk design that stands on a moulded plinth with a two-tiered base. Inscriptions in black paint are displayed on three sides. The north face of the plinth includes a dedication that reads: "IN PROUD, HONOURED & LOVING MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH, WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY, IN THE GREAT WAR OF 1914 - 1919. 'THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE' ECCLUS XLIV 14 'GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS' ST JOHN XV 13 'I SAW THEM THAT HAD GOTTEN THE VICTORY OVER THE BEAST STAND ON THE SEA OF GLASS, HAVING THE HARPS OF GOD' REV XV 2." Below this inscription and on the west face are the names of those who died in the First World War. The south face honors the Second World War with the inscription: "ALSO IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE FROM THIS PARISH WHO IN LIKE SPIRIT FELL DURING THE WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945," followed by the names of the Fallen.
