Description
Huxbear House is probably a 17th-century farmhouse that was remodelled in the 19th century. It is built of solid, rendered walls and has slated roofs with 19th-century ridge tiles featuring pierced serrations. There are three rendered stacks; one projecting stack in the right-hand gable has offsets, and another on the ridge is off-centre to the right, likely heating the original hall. A smaller stack is located on the left-hand gable.
The two-storey building has a five-window front, with a two-storey gabled entrance porch in the second bay from the right. The ground storey of the porch features a late 19th-century round-arched wooden doorway within a square-headed opening, with trelliswork filling the spandrels. A nine-panelled door is inside the porch. The two left-hand windows and the right-hand window on each storey have three-part sash windows without horns. The ground-floor windows have six-paned centre sashes and two-paned side sashes, while the second-storey windows have three-paned top sashes in the centre and one-paned side sashes. The upper-storey window of the porch is a six-paned sash, and there is a six-paned casement window in the second storey to the left of the porch.
The interior was not inspected, but may be of interest. On the south end of the ground floor, there are remains of a stud and panel screen. Features include ovolo moulded chamfers and scroll stops, and a chamfered wooden lintel over an old fireplace in an adjoining room that backs onto a former cross passage.
