Description

Stanaway Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse located on Stoney Road in Grundisburgh. It is timber framed with a colourwashed render and has a 20th-century plain tile roof. The building is two storeys high and features a three-cell baffle-entry plan.

On the entrance front, there is a projecting gabled single-storey wing on the left, which has a 2-light 20th-century window on the ground floor and two lancet windows above. To the right of this wing, there is a 20th-century single-storey gabled porch with a shallow gable, featuring a wooden framed 3-light casement window. Above the porch, there are two similar 3-light casements at the first floor level. A brick axial stack is located at the ridge towards the right of centre. The right gable end is mostly blank, except for a 20th-century 3-light casement in the attic.

At the rear, there is a lean-to outshut on the right with a pantile roof, and to the left of this are two 3-light casements and a single casement. The left gable end has an outshut at ground floor level, with a half-glazed door on the left and a 3-light casement on the right. There is a single-light casement on the first floor and a 3-light casement in the attic.

Inside, the ground floor room features chamfered ceiling beams with bar stops, wall posts, and close-studded walling. The first floor has further close-studded walls with jowled wall posts and additional chamfered ceiling beams. One room contains arched cupboards with shaped shelves and a late 18th-century to early 19th-century classical surround. The attic has wind bracing and wide floorboards. Some 19th-century walling and planted timbers from the 1930s are present in the ground floor sitting room. A winder staircase leads up from the lobby.
