Description

Western House is a house dating from the early to mid-19th century, situated on the west side of Fore Street in Chudleigh. It is constructed primarily of stone, although the external surfaces are covered with a smooth cement render, and has a slate roof with gabled ends and rendered end stacks topped with several chimney pots. The house follows a double-depth, 4-room plan, with a central passage and two main front rooms.

The symmetrical front facade has three bays and deep eaves with decorative eaves brackets. A flat-roofed, central porch projects forwards, featuring glazed sides, pilasters with recessed panels, and a two-leaf outer door with glazed panels. Inside the porch is a further panelled door. Flanking the porch are three-storey canted bay windows, with moulded cornices. The ground floor windows are two-pane sashes, while the first floor windows are eight-pane sashes. The second floor windows comprise two-over-four-pane sashes flanked by one-over-two-pane sashes. The two windows in the central bay have distinctive floating cornices, with a twelve-pane sash on the first floor and a three-over-six-pane sash on the second floor. Small lunette windows are located on the second floor returns.

Western House is set slightly back from Fore Street, and is protected by a low wall constructed of grey limestone rubble.
