Description

This is an early 19th-century house located on Fore Street, Chudleigh. It’s likely built from stone rubble, originally rendered, with a hipped slate roof and end stacks featuring brick shafts. The original layout comprised a double-depth main range with four rooms, arranged with a central entrance and two principal heated rooms to the front, one on either side of an entrance hall that likely contained the staircase. Single-storey blocks with hipped slate roofs were originally attached to the main range on the left and right sides.

The symmetrical front facade has three bays, with a deeply recessed central bay and a wide eaves line. A half-glazed front door, featuring fielded panels and a panelled soffit, is set within a doorcase. A pierced canopy and vertical trellis panels, reminiscent of Chinese Chippendale design, frame the ground floor of the recessed central bay. Pilasters with sunk panels are located on either side of the central recess and to the left and right of the main range. Ground floor French windows, with reeded pilasters, cornices on brackets, and transoms, are present. There are three 12-pane sash windows on the first floor, with shutters on the outer windows; similar 12-pane sash windows are found in the single-storey blocks. A glazed verandah, supported by timber posts and hipped at the ends of the main range, features decorative paving with cobbles and local stone. Contemporary chimney-pieces remain inside, and original joinery and the staircase may still be present. The house is considered a particularly attractive early 19th-century building with notable exterior features.
