Description
The churchyard gates, gate piers, and walls surrounding St James' Church in Teignmouth were built in 1821, with some later 19th-century modifications. The walls are made of red sandstone rubble, while the gate piers feature limestone caps and are accompanied by cast-iron and wrought-iron gates.
Substantial gate piers flank the path about 20 meters from the west door, topped with stepped shallow pyramidal caps that support cast-iron gates approximately 2 meters high. These gates resemble long and short railings but include interlacing tracery on the central horizontal bar, with spade-head tops and arrow-head tops on the upper rails, which are square in section. Additionally, 20th-century segmental steel arches bolted to the top of each gate have pointed spikes.
The wall extends around 35 meters to the north, turns east for about 25 meters, then turns north again for approximately 6 meters before turning east once more for about 6 meters. In the angle formed is the tomb of Thomas Luny. The wall descends the hill for about 70 meters to meet the north-east corner of the church. Approximately 10 meters from the north end are double wrought-iron gates, also about 2 meters high, featuring square-section long and short rails with heavy arrow heads on the upper and lower rails.
A curved revetment wall connects the south-east corner of the church to the west gates, enclosing the south side of the churchyard. This wall extends about 110 meters, and approximately 27 meters from the east end is a long and short-railed gate with steps.
