Description
Number 5 is a house located in the center of a terrace of three, dating from around 1830, which remodeled an earlier structure. The exterior features painted stucco, possibly over cob at the base, and a slate roof with rendered stacks on the side party walls. The building has a double-depth plan and is two storeys high with an attic and semi-basement, presenting a two-window range. A 20th-century glazed belvedere is situated at the center of the ridge, flanked by two late 19th-century hipped-roofed dormers. The facade includes a coped parapet and a cornice band, with chamfered rusticated pilasters at the party walls. The late 19th-century plate-glass sash windows, which were originally 8/8-pane sashes, feature curved glass in curved moulded frames on the ground floor, while the basement has 20th-century windows. The interior has not been inspected. A notable subsidiary feature is the late 19th-century flight of steps, which includes cast-iron railings and a wrought-iron handrail that is wreathed at the ends. Additionally, there is a late 19th-century semicircular arch with panelled reveals and soffit leading to a four-panel door with a fanlight and a 20th-century mask keystone; the former entrance was located at the rear. Historically, the terrace is believed to be a remodelling of a former warehouse linked to the salt cod trade on this site.
