Description

This is a house, built around 1830, and likely incorporating an earlier structure. It stands at the left end of a terrace in Shaldon, with its entrance to the rear. The exterior is painted stucco, possibly over cob, with a slate roof, hipped to the left, and a rendered stack forming a party wall with the adjacent property. The house has a double-depth plan. The front elevation is two storeys high, with a semi-basement and attic, and features a four-window range. Dormers are visible, along with a coped parapet and cornice band. Shallow, curved bays have moulded architraves and curved frames, housing curved plate glass windows to the ground and first floors; two bays are present to the right, one on a wide curved corner, and one 20th-century window is on the first floor of the left return. The ground level rises towards the rear, where a six-panel door is set within a doorcase featuring pilasters and an entablature. The interior was not inspected. Attached to the left are substantial gate piers with raised panels to the shafts and moulded cornices that sweep up to pyramidal caps. These support a wrought-iron overthrow originally intended for a lantern. According to local tradition, the terrace represents a remodelling of a former warehouse associated with the salt cod trade.
