Description

COMBE MARTIN BUZZACOTT ROAD SS 64 NW 2/57 Front entrance gates and gatepiers - approximately 5 metres west of Buzzacott Manor GV II Entrance gates and gatepiers. Late C19. Cast and wrought iron. Each gate is divided into 5 sections, the 2 outer sections divided by a pair of verticals, the larger middle section bifurcated by a central vertical with twist finial descending only to the quarter-height double horizontal rail. Each panel above and below this rail is richly ornamented with scroll and strapwork decoration with a central cartouche displaying the then owners initials (member of Snell family). The lock is stamped Hill and Smith. Overthrow made up of scrolls enriched with paterae. Gatepiers square in section, the capitals surmounted by ball finials and the open panelled sides filled with scroll decoration. Smaller wrought iron pedestrians gate to left side.
