Description

The tunnel on the south side of the lane leading to Berrys Quarry is a 19th-century structure made of stone rubble. It is a short tunnel that provides cart access to the enclosed quarry. The tunnel features a semi-circular arch and is approximately 5 metres in length. The rough stone voussoirs form the arch, and there is a retaining parapet over the front entrance. Limestone quarrying and lime-burning were significant industries in Combe Martin during the 19th century. This tunnel is an unusual survival, and breaks in the masonry indicate that it was extended over time as the spoil banks around the quarry increased.
