Description
The Combe Martin War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1921 by William C. Williams and Co. It is made of light grey granite and features bronze relief plaques. The memorial has a rusticated square stepped base that leads to a tapering square plinth, which supports a square shaft topped by a wheel-headed cross. It is located within a walled memorial garden that includes wrought iron gates.
On the east face of the plinth, there is a plaque that reads: "To the honoured memory of the men of this parish who gave their lives for their country in the Great War 1914 -1919" and lists 35 names. Additionally, a bronze plaque on the steps commemorates those who fell in World War II, stating: "Also to the honoured memory of the men of this parish who gave their lives for their country in the World War 1939-45" and includes 24 names.
The memorial was unveiled by the Bishop of Exeter in 1921, and the plaque for World War II was added in the late 1940s. War memorials like this one are important as they serve as focal points for memorial services and remind us of the human cost of conflict. The Combe Martin War Memorial is elegantly designed and is associated with other listed memorials and buildings, which contributes to its significance.
