Description
The engine house and chimney at Knap Down Silver Mines date from the mid-19th century. Constructed from stone rubble, the chimney features brick capping. The engine house has a rectangular shape and is built gable-end into the bank. It has a bob-wall at the front with a tall, narrow semi-circular arched opening, while the rear wall includes a tall circular chimney shaft with oversailing brick courses at the top. Only the plinths of the side walls remain. This engine house was likely built in 1859 to house the engine installed by James Sims of Redruth and was operated by the North Devon Silver Lead Mining Company, specifically the Vale of Girt and Nap Down Douglas Stuckey Adventurers Slopes.
