Description
15 and 16 Twyford are a pair of houses built around 1850. They are constructed with mass wall techniques and are finished with stucco. The houses have a natural slate roof that is gabled at both ends, featuring axial and right end stacks with brick shafts and crested pots.
The layout consists of double-fronted houses with central entrances, each two rooms wide and two rooms deep, with an addition at the right end. The exterior is two storeys high with a three-bay front. There are pilasters on the left, right, and center, each with round-headed sunk panels. The building has an eaves band, a platband, and a deep cornice on brackets that extends around the returns, forming a pedimented gable. The central front doors are recessed and have panelled reveals.
On the ground floor, the windows are high-transomed French windows with glazing bars, while the first-floor outer windows are 16-pane sashes, with a 12-pane sash in the center. A verandah supported by cast-iron columns and topped with a glazed roof runs along the front.
The left return of No. 15 features a 20th-century verandah with timber posts and lapped glass fixed windows, along with a Gothick arched attic window in the gable. No. 16, on the right, has a single-storey addition at the right end that includes a half-glazed door with margin panes. The interior has not been inspected but may contain interesting features.
