Description

13 and 14 Twyford are a pair of houses, likely built around 1850. They are constructed of stone with a slate roof that has gabled ends. The houses feature stacks with corbelled cornices and tapering terracotta pots, as well as cast-iron rainwater goods.

The layout consists of mirror-image houses, each one room wide with an outer entrance passage that contains the stair. The right-hand house has an Edwardian addition at the right end, which is set back from the front.

The exterior is two storeys high with a half basement and a single-storey addition. It has deep eaves supported by moulded brackets and an eaves band. There are pilasters at the center and on both sides, each with sunk round-headed panels. The front has a 2:2 window arrangement and a six-bay verandah that features a cast-iron geometrical trellis and a hipped glazed roof, with a guilloche frieze on one side only. The front doors are four-panel doors, with the upper panels being glazed, and they have doorcases with panelled reveals. The first-floor windows consist of 16 and 12-pane sashes, while the ground-floor windows include a two-light casement with glazing bars in the right-hand house and a high-transomed French window with small panes in the center. The single-storey block on the right has a hipped roof and features a six-panel door with a 16-pane sash alongside.

Inside, No. 14 retains original joinery, including a stick baluster stair with a mahogany handrail and a slate fireplace in the old kitchen at the rear. Other interesting features may still exist within the property.
