Description
The pedestrian gateway, gate, and entrance lodge to Belmont Hospital, formerly the Tiverton workhouse, were constructed between 1837 and 1838 to the designs of Scott and Moffat. The lodge is currently boarded up and disused. It is built from coursed and snecked local stone, featuring a slate roof and a stack with a glazed yellow brick shaft. The gateway includes an iron gate.
The architectural style is classical. The pedestrian entrance to the former workhouse is from Water Lane, leading to what was the main entrance of the workhouse complex, with a small lodge located to the east of the gate. The lodge has a two-room layout with a central entrance and a rear right stack.
The exterior showcases a fine classical gateway with a round-headed pedimented archway that includes a keyblock and piers with capitals. The iron gate features diagonal cross-bracing with a central roundel, and the tympanum of the arch is filled with a panel of iron bars. The single-storey lodge has a stone eaves band and a symmetrical three-bay front, topped with a hipped slate roof that has lead rolls. The stonework consists of snecked stone with hammer-dressed ashlar dressings. A projecting pedimented porch features a round-headed outer doorway and a four-panel front door. The left and right windows are boarded up but were likely small-pane timber sashes. The interior has not been inspected.
