Description
This is a mid-19th century house located on Chapel Street, Tiverton. The front is of red brick laid in Flemish bond, with occasional extra headers. There are keystones and a painted door surround, likely constructed of cement. The windows have cast-iron sills, and the roof is slate-covered. Brick chimneys rise from the ridge, featuring projecting brick courses forming caps and two moulded cylindrical pots on each.
The two-storey, three-window front has a central doorway and a cart entrance to the left. The doorway has a rusticated surround with boarded reveals and a soffit carved with a Greek pattern. The door itself features two tall, upright moulded panels and an old knocker, set above a three-paned fanlight. The cart entrance has a segmental arch with a keystone, containing double plank doors, with the right-hand door the width of a standard house door. The windows have slightly curved arches with keystones and six-paned sashes. A moulded board runs beneath the eaves.
The interior of the house was not inspected during the listing process.
The house was built by the Heathcoat family, and its surprisingly late date is documented in “Heathcoats’ Housing” within “The Lowman Chronicle.” Similar housing in the Georgian tradition was built by the Heathcoats as late as 1875-6. The original door and wooden glazing-bars are important elements of the house's design.
