Description

This is a former workhouse and, at the time of listing, an isolation hospital, constructed in 1851 as the Truro Union Workhouse. It is built of coursed Bath stone with granite dressings to the entrance wing, while the remainder is of local rubble with brick dressings. Granite sills, keyblocks, eaves cornices, and coped gable ends are also present. The roof over the entrance wing is of dry Delabole slate, while other roof sections have replaced slate with asbestos. Brick axial stacks are visible. The building has a large plan with wings arranged around three courtyards, forming an E-shaped layout with projecting end wings to the entrance range. A central octagonal tower rises four stories. The entrance wing is two stories high with a single-story entrance porch and projecting wings, all under the same eaves level. The remaining portions of the building are three stories in height, excluding the four-story tower.

The symmetrical entrance front has a 3:1:3:1:3:1:3 bay arrangement, featuring a plinth, string course, chamfered eaves cornice, and coped gables with moulded kneelers. The projecting single bays have tall round arches with voussoirs and keyblocks. First-floor windows are sash windows within square-headed openings, above round-arched ground-floor windows with projecting keyblocks. Original hornless sash windows with glazing bars and spoked fanlight heads remain. The central doorway has a spoked fanlight above a 20th-century reduced door (originally with iron gates). Other elevations are largely unaltered, except where obscured by 20th-century additions, and retain many of the original hornless sash windows with glazing bars set in brick surrounds and keyblocks to the upper floors.

The interior features cantilevered granite staircases. Historical information regarding the building comes from "The Truro Buildings Research Group: From Moresk Road to Malpas: Truro: 1980-.”
