Description
The milestone, dating from around 1754, is located approximately 14 meters east of No. 187 on Bodmin Road in Truro. Made of stone, it has a rectangular shape and stands about 0.70 meters high, featuring a segmental-arched top. The milestone is painted white and inscribed with the words FROM / TRURO / 1 / MILE in black sans serif capitals. Additionally, there is an incised benchmark on the right-hand face.
Historically, from the mid-18th century onwards, turnpike trusts were encouraged to install markers like this milestone along the roads they managed. The Truro Turnpike Trust, established by Act of Parliament in 1754, was the first in Cornwall, and this milestone is situated on the former turnpike road connecting Truro to Mitchell, passing through Calerick and Trispen. It is marked on the first edition Ordnance Survey map from 1890. Although the road was once a rural route, it is no longer a main road and has since been developed with post-war suburban housing.
This milestone is designated as Grade II for several key reasons: it is an intact example from 1754, remains in its original position, has group value with other listed milestones along the turnpike route, and holds historic interest as a testament to the significant road improvements initiated by Turnpike Trusts in the 18th century.
