Description
5 and 6 Merridale Grove are a pair of houses built around 1840, with some later alterations. They are constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and have a stuccoed garden front. The houses feature a hipped slate roof with both stucco and brick stacks. The design includes a double-depth plan with a rear wing and stands two storeys tall, presenting a symmetrical six-window range to the garden front. The ends of the houses break forward and are accentuated with angle pilasters, topped with a frieze and wide eaves.
The windows are framed with eared architraves; those on the ground floor are embellished with scrolls at the bases and include French windows. The left end features a canted bay window, while the right end has a two-storey bowed window with three casements. The first floor is fitted with casement windows. There is a truncated cross-axial stack and four return lateral stacks, with brick on the right and other stacks located at the rear. The three-window returns are similar, with some blind windows. Central round-headed entrances are set in recesses and are topped with fanlights and glazed doors.
The rear wing contains sashed windows, flanked by round-headed stair windows, and features projections with first-floor round-headed sashed windows. Inside, the houses retain features from around 1840, including cornices and fireplaces. Number 6 has a staircase with enriched iron balusters. This pair of houses is part of a mid-19th century residential development.
