Description
This is a pair of houses located at 3 and 4 Merridale Grove, built around 1840. They are constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and are stuccoed on three sides, topped with a hipped slate roof featuring stucco stacks. The houses have a double-depth plan with a rear wing and are two stories high, presenting a symmetrical six-window range to the garden front. The ends of the buildings project forward and are accentuated with angle pilasters, a top frieze, and wide eaves.
The windows are adorned with eared architraves; those on the ground floor have scrolls at the base, although some are missing. The ends feature canted bay windows with cornices, all equipped with French windows. The first-floor windows are casements, wider at the ends. House number 3, on the right, includes a 20th-century flat-topped dormer. The houses have a cross-axial stack and return lateral stacks, with additional stacks at the rear. The three-window returns maintain similar architectural details, with some blind windows.
Round-headed entrances are set in recesses and are flanked by pilasters, archivolts, and fanlights above glazed doors. The rear of the houses features sashed windows in the wing, accompanied by flanking round-headed stair windows and small round-headed windows at the ends. Inside, there are some remaining cornices and fireplaces, along with stairs that have enriched iron balusters. This pair of houses is part of a mid-19th century residential development.
