Description
16 and 17 Newport Road are a pair of houses built around 1850. They are constructed of brick with stucco dressings and feature a hipped slate roof with brick stacks. The houses have a double-depth plan and are designed in a Georgian style. They stand two storeys high and have two symmetrical three-window ranges, with No. 17 having an additional window on both floors at the right end. The boxed eaves add to the architectural detail. Each entrance has a plain surround, an overlight, and a door with two tall panels. The ground floor includes four canted bay windows, each adorned with a frieze and cornice, and fitted with sashes of 8, 12, and 8 panes. The first floor windows, including those at the right end, have sills and wedge lintels over 12-pane sashes. Similar windows are found on the two-window returns, with the left return being plastered. At the rear, there are two wings with hipped roofs. This pair of houses is part of a mid-19th century development that followed the construction of the railway in 1837.
