Description
A terrace of five houses, numbers 127 and 131, dating to 1837-50 and built as housing for railway workers. The houses are constructed of brick with ashlar dressings, and have a slate roof with brick stacks. They are designed in the Tudor style, arranged as a symmetrical double-fronted terrace of 15 windows. The houses have wide eaves and verges. Each house has a Tudor-arched entrance with a single-chamfered ashlar surround, originally containing panelled doors, though the door at number 127 is a 20th-century replacement. The windows are timber-mullioned; the ground floor has cross casements, while the first floor has two-light casements with small panes of glass. The building has end stacks and four cross-axial stacks, with two stacks truncated. Attached stone-coped brick end walls enclose a stone base where front railings once stood, and there are square ashlar gatepiers with caps. Rear wings are also present. This represents a good and attractive example of housing intended for workers.
