Description
Birches Barn House is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the mid-18th century and has a later addition. The building is constructed of brick with plaster dressings and features a tile roof and brick stacks. It stands two storeys high with an attic and has a three-window range, with the right end being a later addition. The windows are topped with rusticated wedge lintels that have keys; the right end windows feature a brick cambered arch, while the first floor has a brick flat arch. There is a central gabled dormer, and the windows are fitted with small-paned casements that include iron opening casements. The entrance, located to the left of centre, has a gabled canopy and a glazed door. The house has end stacks and a cross-axial stack. The rear of the building is similar to the front and includes an outshut under a catslide roof to the right of a 20th-century glazed conservatory. Inside, there are chamfered spine beams and a large fireplace with a bressummer and recesses. This house is a rare example of a farmhouse in an area that has seen suburban development.
