Description
Hares is a cottage located at the end of a row in Lympstone, facing south away from Church Road. It dates from around 1700 and has undergone significant alterations, particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features plastered cob on stone footings and has a gabled-end pantiled roof. It has a two-room plan with a central cross passage and rear stairs, and stands two storeys high.
The front of the cottage originally had a symmetrical three-window arrangement. Currently, there are two 2-light casement windows and one 12-pane horizontally sliding sash window with wooden guiding pegs to the sills on the first floor. To the right of the central door is a 2-light casement window, while a 20th-century bay window is located to the left. Most other windows are also from the 20th century, and there is a 20th-century garage facing the street.
Inside, the cottage features a variety of panelling, including a mostly fielded panel dado in the ground floor rooms. The late screens passage consists of different types of panels, likely from various periods, and there are fielded panel doors. The ceilings have two chamfered beams, with the one in the right-hand room featuring step stops.
