Description
Vine Cottage is a cottage located at the end of a row, with origins dating back to the 17th century and modifications made in the 19th century. It is constructed from cut and squared Ham stone and features a double Roman clay tiled roof that has replaced the original thatch, with coped gables and stone end chimney stacks. The cottage has two storeys and consists of two bays.
The windows are hollow-chamfered mullioned types set in chamfered recesses, with all being three-light except for the lower bay two, which is four-light. Each window has separate labels, horizontal-bar glazing, and iron-framed opening lights. There is an additional plain window to the left of bay one. Between the bays, there is a 20th-century boarded door that is accessed by five steps, situated in a moulded cambered-arched doorway with incised spandrels and a label over a shallow lintel.
There are indications of a previous door position in the left half of lower bay two, suggesting that the cottage may have originally been two separate units. There are also signs that the front wall was slightly raised to accommodate thinner roofing material. The south gable may have been rebuilt but includes two two-light mullioned windows, one at each level. A 20th-century flat-roofed extension is present at the rear. The interior has not been seen.
