Description

Lympstone War Memorial is a Cornish granite structure dating to around 1920. It is situated on Church Road, approximately 17 metres southwest of the Parish Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a building of group value, and opposite several other Grade II listed buildings. The memorial consists of a tall cross placed in front of a curved screen wall.

The cross itself is made of plain granite, with slightly splayed arms, and rises from a shouldered pedestal that sits upon a stepped base. The curved screen wall, constructed from coursed granite blocks and topped with simple flat coping, forms an enclosure behind the cross.

An inscription on the front of the pedestal’s face reads “I STAND/ TO THE MEMORY OF THE/ MEN OF LYMPSTONE/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN/ THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918.” A further inscription behind the cross, on the screen wall, reads "LIVE YE/ FOR/ ENGLAND" to the left and "WE FOR/ ENGLAND/ DIED" to the right. Commemorated names are listed alphabetically on the left and right wings of the wall. A later tablet, bearing the Second World War inscription “1939 – 1945/ (4 NAMES)", is fixed to the upper step of the base.
