Description
Bellhangers is a 17th-century end cottage, originally part of a row of three properties on Church Road in Lympstone. The building is constructed with plastered cob walls on stone footings and has a gabled slate roof. In the 19th century, the cottage to the left of Bellhangers was converted into a shop, both sections originally single-cell structures with rear wings added to the shop. A stack with brick shafts is located at the end of the building.
The front of the building has a 2-window arrangement. A 6:12:6 pane oriel window is on the left, with a horizontally sliding sash; a 18-pane horizontally sliding sash window is on the right. Below the oriel is a 24-pane bow window with a moulded cornice, representing the former shop window. To the right of the two front doors is a 16-pane horizontally sliding sash window. The rear wing features two small casement windows on its left-hand elevation.
Inside, a ceiling beam is visible, featuring a chamfered edge with hollow step stops. The roof retains two trusses, with collars halved and purlins back on to principals; the apex is not visible, and the timbers are clean. Bellhangers, together with the adjacent cottages, forms an important group of buildings close to the parish church.
