Description

Marden House Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early to mid-18th century, possibly incorporating some earlier elements. It features diaper brickwork with flush stone quoins and dressings, topped with a slate roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, consisting of three bays, with a four-bay rear wing on the right. The central entrance leads into a stair hall, flanked by reception rooms and a kitchen in the wing. The entrance includes a six-panelled door with a stone architrave and a flat hood supported by stone brackets. There is a moulded stone sill and a mid-wall string. The windows are painted 2-light stone-mullioned, with a 3-light window in the main reception room on the ground floor to the left, all featuring gauged brick lintels. The wing has similar windows, although the fenestration has been altered. One window is a canted bay, and there is a door with a stone surround and a canopy on brackets, which is dated 1724 and has been reset. The end bay was rebuilt in the early 19th century.

Inside, the staircase is from the early 19th century and features turned newels. The right sitting room has an ogee stopped chamfered cross beam, with a corresponding spine beam in the kitchen at the rear. The left room has a stack on the rear wall and a lateral stack in the wing. The principal rafter and collar trusses, along with butt purlins, extend the full length of the wing.
