Description

Chirton Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with some 19th-century alterations and incorporating earlier brickwork. It features diaper brickwork and a thatched roof. The building is two storeys high and was likely originally designed with a 2-bay lobby entry plan in timber framing, which was reclad in brick during the 18th century and extended southward in the 19th century by adding a cross passage and one bay. The entrance is located between the second and third bays and consists of a six-panelled door with glazed upper panels, topped by a canopy supported by simple cut brackets. The ground floor has three-light transomed windows, which are stop-chamfered, with stone sills and segmental brick arches featuring keyblocks. The upper floor has three-light casement windows and there is a two-course plat band. A 20th-century bay window is present at the south end, along with a brick stack and a gable stack for the addition. Above the door, there is a blind panel.

Inside, the north room, now used as a breakfast room, contains a chalkstone stack with a replaced lintel, and a fireplace in the dining room at the back features a timber lintel and replaced brick jambs. This dining room also has a chamfered spine beam with round and notch stops. The kitchen has two binders, one of which has been replaced. The cross passage of the extension has a coloured quarry tile floor.
