Description

No. 61 is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the 15th century, with alterations from the 17th and 18th centuries, and was modified again in the early 19th century. The building is timber framed on a Malmstone base, which was refaced in brick during the 18th century, and features a pantiled roof. It is two storeys high and has an L-shaped plan. The front block originally had a two-bay lobby entry plan with a central entrance that includes a six-panelled door topped with a flat stone canopy supported by brackets. There is a plat band and early 19th-century sixteen-pane sash windows with painted wedge lintels and sills on either side of the entrance. A central stack is present, and the roof is hipped. The right gable and rear of the building display exposed timber framing, consisting of three panels high with internal tension braces.

To the right, there is a rear wing that has three bays, featuring a central lean-to porch and 19th-century casement windows, with those on the ground floor having segmental arches. A flush five-course vitrified brick plat band runs along the building. Inside the rear wing, there are two roof trusses and several smoke-blackened timbers from the late 15th to early 16th centuries, while the central room on the ground floor has late medieval moulded cross beams. The roof has been reconstructed around a chalkstone and parged stack, which now has an internal stone drip mould. An early 19th-century stair is located at the junction with the front block, which contains two 18th-century bolection-moulded timber fire surrounds in the right parlour and the room above.
