Description
Milepost opposite Coombe Corner is a mid 19th-century milepost located on the Salisbury Road in Donhead St. Mary. It features a cast-iron triangular pillar with a flat sloping top. The lettering on the two front faces indicates distances: "SHASTON/2" on the left face and "SALISBURY/18" on the right face, with "DONHEAD ST MARY" inscribed on the chamfered angle between. This milepost is part of a series made by Cockey, an ironfounder from Frome, and marks the turnpiked road from Salisbury to Shaftesbury, which was established between 1787 and 1788.
