Description
The Donhead St Mary War Memorial is located in a grassed area on the southern side of the churchyard of St John, which is a Grade II-listed church. The memorial features a three-stepped square base topped with a square plinth, a tapering shaft, and a Celtic cross, all made of limestone.
On the south-facing side of the plinth, there is a circular wreath outlined in lead, which bears the following inscription in lead lettering: "LEST WE FORGET/ TO THE MEMORY OF/ THOSE IN THIS PLACE WHO/ DIED FOR US IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ THEIR BODIES ARE BURIED IN PEACE/ BUT THEIR NAMES LIVETH/ FOR EVERMORE." Below this, it also includes "1939 – 1945" followed by names. The names of those who fell are recorded on the remaining three sides of the memorial.
