Description
The Little Saxham War Memorial is located in the churchyard of St Nicholas Church, which is a Grade I listed building. The memorial features a cross on a tapered plinth made from Portland stone, resting on a base of York stone. The cross has a patonce style head with intertwined carved IHS at its center.
All four sides of the Portland stone plinth are inscribed with messages. The front face reads: "LEST WE FORGET/ TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND/ IN GRATEFUL LOVING MEMORY OF/ THE MEN WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES/ FOR/ LIBERTY AND HONOUR/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918/ (NAMES)/ R.I.P." The rear face honors those from the parish who served, stating: "ALSO/ IN RECOGNITION OF THOSE/ FROM THIS PARISH/ WHO NOBLY CAME FORWARD FOR/ THEIR KING AND COUNTRY." The side inscriptions include: "TRANSLATED FROM/ THE WARFARE OF THE WORLD/ INTO THE PEACE OF GOD" and "IN PEACE THEY SLEEP/ GOD THEIR SOULS/ WILL SAFELY KEEP."
