Description

Orchard Cottage is a 17th-century house located on the east side of The Street in Bishops Cannings. It features a timber frame set on a sarsen stone sill, with brick noggings and a chalkstone gable on the north side. The cottage has a thatched roof and is a single storey with an attic, consisting of three bays and an additional half-bay for lobby entry between the second and third bays. The north end bay has been largely rebuilt and may have originally served as a service bay. The framing consists of three panels high with corner braces, numbered from the north. The cottage has a 20th-century door and timber casement windows, along with three flush dormers on the front, the center of which has a 17th-century moulded cornice. There are two flued stacks that were raised in the 19th to 20th centuries, and a lean-to fourth bay, now used as a kitchen, has been added at the south end. Inside, the cottage features chamfered spine beams and a chalkstone stack in the living room with a chamfered fire beam, along with a staircase located at the rear of the stack.
