Description
The Bishops Cannings War Memorial is located in the western part of the churchyard of the Church of St Mary the Virgin, which is a Grade I listed building. It occupies a prominent spot near the main road and is close to several other listed monuments and nearby homes.
This war memorial features a 3.6-meter tall stone wheel-head cross in the Celtic style, positioned atop a slender rectangular cross shaft. The face of the cross head is adorned with a relief-carved cross crosslet. Both the top and bottom of the shaft display panels of Celtic interlace on the front and rear faces, with the sides of the upper panel moulded to create a collar-like support for the cross head. The edges of the cross shaft are highlighted with a carved rope decoration.
The cross shaft rests on a tapered pedestal with a chamfered top, which is also decorated with a relief-carved angular key design along the top edge. The four faces of the pedestal feature black-painted inscriptions and names. The memorial stands on a square base that has a chamfered top.
The main dedicatory inscription on the west face of the pedestal reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE FROM THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918." The names of 23 individuals who fell in the war are listed by name, rank, and date of death on the north and south faces of the pedestal. The east face of the pedestal commemorates two local servicemen who died during the Second World War, including their rank and date of death, reading "1939-1945 (2 NAMES)."
