Description
Bourton Green Cottages are a house, now divided into two cottages, dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries. The construction is timber framed, with colourwashed brick supports, and has a thatched roof. The original layout comprised a single storey and attic, with the main part being two and a half bays long, and a two-bay cross wing to the east. An entrance hall was originally located in a half-bay. The lower section of the house features two cruck bays, with exposed cruck timbers visible on the gable end, including a notched wall plate and purlins. The apex of the roof is of type F3. Lighter timber framing runs below the collar, and the side framing is three panels high, with a raised central section, corner braces, and a flush dormer. The cross wing originally contained a parlour on the south side with a chamber above, and a kitchen on the north side. Windows are timber casements, with two 20th-century dormers on the north side. Some windows incorporate reused moulded canted oriel window heads. Internally, the central bay features a large chalkstone fireplace with ovens and a moulded fire beam. The main parlour has moulded cross beams with stops, and a blocked fireplace. The chamber above the kitchen displays long curved windbraces, which are absent in the main chamber. The staircase has been altered, but maintains its approximate original position within the entrance hall. The roof has a half-hipped design and a three-flue ribbed brick stack.
