Description

Old Black Horse Cottage is a former inn that has been converted into a detached cottage, dating from the late 17th century. It is constructed of rubble stone and features a half-hipped thatched roof with brick stacks. The building has a T-shaped plan and is one storey high with an attic, containing two windows on the front elevation.

The entrance is marked by a 20th-century planked door that is sheltered by a thatched canopy. To the left of the door is a three-light recessed chamfered mullioned window, while to the right are a two-light and a three-light casement window, with the right-hand casement being inserted into a blocked doorway. The attic includes two three-light casements located in an eyebrow dormer.

The right side of the cottage features a gable end facing the road, with the attic covered in fishscale tiles and a two-light casement window. At the rear, there is a large external lateral stack with coping, and a wing to the right has 20th-century two-light and three-light casements, along with a half-glazed door in a lean-to porch.

A Sun Insurance disc is located to the right of the front entrance. The building was originally an inn but was replaced by the Black Horse when the current Dinton to Teffont road was opened in the early 19th century. The interior was not accessible during the survey conducted in March 1985.
