Description
No 74 Fonthill Gifford is an estate cottage built in 1862 for Alfred Morrison. The cottage features dressed limestone on the ground floor and timber-framing on the first floor, topped with a thatched gabled roof and brick stacks that are either diagonally set or square. It is a single storey with an attic and has one window on the north side. The entrance is located on the left return and includes a half-glazed door. To the left of the entrance, there is a 2-light mullioned casement window and a projecting bread oven. The jettied upper floor has a 3-light leaded casement window, which is partly tile-hung.
The front of the cottage has a 4-light leaded casement window on the left, while a 2-storey stone and timber-framed bay on the right features a mullioned leaded casement on the ground floor and a wooden casement on the first floor. An external stone stack to the right has a stone tablet with the initials AM and the date 1862. A cross wing to the right includes a 3-light mullioned casement window on the ground floor, and the right return has a tile-hung gablet with single chamfered casements on the ground floor of the main range. Inside, there is a blocked open fireplace. This cottage is noted as a good early example of Vernacular Revival in estate building, and the style suggests it may have been designed by G. Devey.
