Description

The Tunnel opposite the Landing Stage is a Grade II listed structure located in Fonthill Park, dating from the late 18th century, likely built for William Beckford. The tunnel features a rustic limestone entrance on the east side, which has three arched openings that lead into a domed chamber and then into a curving tunnel, all lined with rustic stone. The west entrance is smaller, with a single square opening that leads to a sloping passage and tunnel. There are also square air vents on either side of the road, accompanied by iron railings. This tunnel is part of a garden fantasy that includes the Grottoes and Hermitage nearby.
