Description

The Hermitage is a grotto built in the late 18th century, constructed from rustic tufa limestone. It is a roughly circular, free-standing structure featuring several entrances and niches, as well as small tunnel-like inner chambers. A large ivy plant has now established itself on top of the grotto. The Hermitage is part of a group of fantasy structures located on either side of Fonthill Lake, which includes the Tunnel located 100 meters to the northwest and other grottoes on the opposite side of the lake. These structures were likely built for William Beckford.
