Description

The landing stage on Fonthill Lake is a structure that may date from the mid-18th century, possibly designed by John Vardy for Alderman Beckford, or it could have been built around 1860 by G. Devey. It is made of limestone and features two pairs of large urns with vermiculated bands. Each pair of urns is connected by a dwarf wall, with the landing stage situated between them. This landing stage is part of the 18th-century landscaping around Fonthill Splendens, which also includes the Georgian Boathouse and the Archway. The urns closely resemble those found on the Archway and the approach walls, which are now believed to be the work of John Vardy.
